Leader vs tippet: what each actually does

Not today, if the leader on your rod is new. Tippet is the last and lightest section of the leader itself — about a fifth of its length — and you spend it an inch or two per fly change.

A nine-foot leader carries roughly twenty inches of it, which is around a dozen fly changes before you're tying flies onto the taper. Past that the leader is shorter and thicker at the tip at once, which is when the cast stops behaving. So: no now, yes in about a dozen changes.

You start the day with a new nine-foot leader out of the packet. The first casts roll out the way the picture on the back says they will, and you stop thinking about it. Six or seven fly changes later, a wind knot trimmed out and two fish landed, everything is arriving in a pile and the fly is slapping down. So you blame the wind. Then your timing. Then the rod.

Then you stretch the leader out alongside the rod and actually look at it. Seven foot two. And the end you keep tying to isn't 5X any more — it's up in the taper somewhere, stiff enough that threading a size 18 takes three tries. Nothing broke. Nothing wore out. You spent it, two inches at a time, and never noticed you had.

What almost everyone does is treat tippet as a stealth item: the thing you add when fish start refusing and you need to go finer. That sounds right, which is why the spool stays at home while the leader on your rod gets shorter every hour.

So the useful question isn't whether you need it. It's how fast you're using the leader up.

How fast do I actually use a leader up?

  • A nine-foot leader leaves the packet with about twenty inches of tippet on the end.
  • Every fly change costs an inch or two between the clip and the retie.
  • That's somewhere around a dozen fly changes before you're tying flies onto taper instead of tippet.
  • Past that point the leader is shorter and thicker at the tip at the same time, so two things changed and you can't point at either.
  • The usual advice is to replace after several fly changes, without ever saying how many.

A fifth of that leader is the part you're meant to spend. The other four fifths are doing a job you can't replace, and it's worth seeing all three laid out.

What's the difference between leader and tippet?

They're the same object at three thicknesses. The long-standing formula splits it 60/20/20 butt, taper and tippet, which on nine feet works out roughly like this.

Only one of those rows is a consumable. That still doesn't explain why the thing is a ramp at all, or why a fat level chunk tied on the end casts like a wet rope.

Why does tying the fly straight to the thick end cast so badly?

Watch what the loop does. It rolls toward the target and eats line as it travels, so the amount of line still moving keeps shrinking. Less mass carrying the same momentum means the front end has to speed up. Model it with no air in the picture and you get the fly speeding up roughly tenfold by the time the loop runs out of line. Real air knocks that down hard, but the direction holds — the fly drives into the target rather than coasting to it.

That's also why the taper is shaped rather than just thin: taper shape changes the fly's speed across the whole cast, not only the last foot. Leader and tippet aren't two parts with two jobs. They're one continuous ramp of decreasing mass, and tippet is the last and lightest rung on it. Tie a heavy level chunk to the end and you've put a step back into a ramp.

There's a threshold in all this, and it isn't in your leader. Run the analysis and a critical loop diameter falls out: above it the fly finishes slower than the line was travelling, below it the fly finishes faster. Same leader, same fly. Tight loop and it drives. Wide loop and it decelerates and flops.

Upstream of everything is the butt, the fat 60% you never touch. Turnover is governed by stiffness rather than diameter governs turnover at that joint, and if the butt is limper than the tip of your fly line the energy hits a wall there and the whole leader lands in a heap. No tippet change fixes that, and changing tippet is exactly what people do. If the cast collapses before the fly ever matters, you're looking at a turnover problem, not a tippet one.

None of that is an argument against tippet. The argument people actually make against it is the knot you have to tie to put it on.

Doesn't the extra knot just give me something else to break?

It does cost you something. Aggregated ratings put a blood knot near 90% in mono, with fluorocarbon a couple of points behind that. Read on its own, that's a loss you're choosing to take.

Then look at where the weak point sits. It's above the fly and below the taper — the one place on the whole rig you'd pick if someone let you pick. Hang up on a branch, or get broken by a better fish than you expected, and you're out a fly and eighteen inches of the cheapest line on the rod. Without that joint, the break happens somewhere up in the tapered leader you paid for, and now you're rebuilding the front end in failing light with nothing to rebuild it from. The knot isn't a tax on your rig. It's a fuse, and you get to say where it goes.

The other reason people buy tippet is material, usually fluorocarbon, usually on the belief that it stretches less and therefore sets hooks better. Testing puts both stretching 20–30% before failure, with nylon holding knots better dry and after soaking. What you feel in fluoro is stiffness, not less stretch. It does sink faster, which is worth something under a nymph and not much on a dry fly. If you're choosing on knot security in bad light, nylon is the easier thing to tie and the more forgiving thing to get slightly wrong.

Which leaves the only part of this that actually costs money: whether you buy a spool at all, or just keep buying whole leaders.

So do I buy a spool, or just buy more leaders?

Buying leaders works. It's just the expensive version of the same repair — a complete tapered leader to replace a fifth of one. A spool holds about thirty feet on a spool, which at twenty inches a go is close to eighteen new tips off a single spool. One spool, eighteen leaders' worth of business end.

What to do with that on the water: when the fly starts landing in a pile, measure before you blame anything. Stretch the leader along the rod. If it's a foot or more short of what it started at and the end feels stiff between your fingers, cut back until you're on clean level line and add 18 to 24 inches of tippet in the size you were fishing. That puts the last rung of the ramp back where it belongs and gets the fuse back below the taper.

The reason to notice at the dozen mark, rather than eventually, is that crossing it moves two variables at once. The leader is shorter and thicker at the tip, so the cast changes and the drift changes together and there's nothing to point at. Catch it early and it's a two-minute retie. Catch it late and you've spent an evening blaming the wind.

Check it at the bench, not at dusk

Before the next session, pull the leader off the reel and lay it against the rod. Nine feet of rod is a ruler you already own. If it's short and the end is stiff, retie it now, in decent light, sitting down — not on the water with an hour left and a size 18 in your fingers.

Everything else is small stuff, and it's the small stuff people ask about at the tailgate.

What else do people ask about tippet?

What size do I use? Start by taking the hook size and divide fly size by three — a size 18 lands you near 6X, a size 12 near 4X. Go heavier if the water is fast or brushy and you're losing flies.

Blood knot or surgeon's? A panel of guides and shop hands couldn't settle it, with several noting that experts split on blood versus surgeon's matters less than how well you tie the one you pick. Learn one to the point you can tie it without looking. When the two diameters are far apart, a triple surgeon's is the safer bet.

Can I just use tippet for the whole leader? No. Level line all the way is a ramp with no ramp in it, so the loop has nothing to hand its energy to and the fly lands on top of everything.

Does it go off on the spool? Nylon does, given heat and sunlight and time, which is why where you keep spools matters more than what you paid for them.
